Not Just for Christmas

Destroy....

Six years old but still as true as ever......

There aren't many left here that haven't already self destructed, so perhaps what my old Nan said was true after all, can't remember the exact phrase but  it was something like

" if you just ignore them, they will eventually implode in a pustulant ball of their own inflated pomposity, and go away"

...No more heroes any more,
 Just Tom and Katie,
Waving from the door,
 Of their retreat in Tuscany,
 A fame addicted nonentity,
 And none to rouse us,
 From the nightmare,
And lead us to the morning.

1-1=1

I fight! I love! I conquer......like a Barbarian!

Just finished watching this film - it has to be watched because it is SO bad!  Epic for all the wrong reasons.

John Wayne in the mongol version of 'blacked up' with 'slanty eye' make up and a fu manchu moustache delivering the cheesiest dialogue I have ever heard in his finest western drawl.

Looked it up and not only did the film bomb, they filmed the exteriors one year after and 140 miles away from the site of 'extensive above ground nuclear weapons testing'.

Then director Dick Powell arranged to have 60 tons of presumably irradiated soil shipped back to Hollywood for the studio re-shoots.

Turns out this movie might have literally killed Wayne, the film's director and a number of other members of the cast and crew.

"As the 20th century draws to a close, the United States stands as the world's pre-eminent power. Having led the West to victory in the Cold War, America faces an opportunity and a challenge: Does the United States have the vision to build upon the achievements of past decades? Does the United States have the resolve to shape a new century favorable to American principles and interests"

updated - just watched a program about the Tea Party and an inward looking American right is just as f**ed up as an outward looking one!

The Wisdom of Kelly

E before O except before E-I-E-I-O.
Feed a cold, starve for pizza. Starve a pizza, eat cold feet.
He who laughs last laughs West.
It's better to have loved and lost than never to have seen 'Lost in Space' at all.
It turns, therefore I am.
Make new thoughts, but keep the old, one is silver, and the other is old.
Mom and Dad are my relatives, therefore I am.
There, but for the flippers, go I.
They will never buy the cow if they can get the eggs for free.
Those who can - do, those who can't - do not.
Use a condom, go to jail.

Colour and Light - the photographers craft

A beautifully written little eulogy (here) on the dying technical craft of photography

"Photography is dead....Go to a tourist destination, say the Eiffel Tower. Look how many people are looking at it holding up a camera between them and the tower, They don’t look at the tower, they look at the camera. They do this all over the world. What do they see? What do they experience?"

Bump

Things that go 'bump' in the night
Should not really give one a fright.
It's the hole in each ear
That lets in the fear,
That, and the absence of light!
